Independence of justice under attack, outgoing prosecutor says
Outgoing Supreme Court prosecutor Efterpi Koutzamani said on her last day on the job Thursday that there had been concerted efforts to damage the country’s justice system.
“There have been attempts recently to undermine the independence and prestige of the justice system,” she said in a written statement, and called on judiciary officials to take action to protect it.
In March, Koutzamani was accused by Defense Minister Panos Kammenos of covering up large-scale investigations into kickbacks.
Meanwhile a prosecutor said Thursday that there was no evidence to back claims that judges and judicial officials had been influenced in the investigation of Andreas Vgenopoulos for his part in the collapse of Cypriot lender Laiki Bank in 2013.
