University blasts gov’t for failing to stop unauthorized occupation of facilities
The senate of Thessaloniki’s Aristotle University on Tuesday hit out at the government for failing to stop the occupation of two of its faculties by hundreds of activists backing the pro-refugee No Border Camp that left widespread vandalism in its wake.
“The Aristotle University experienced a type of occupation over the past few days,” the statement said. “A group of Greek and foreign anti-establishment protesters organized a free campsite on the university campus, occupied two buildings, broke doors and painted on walls,” it said, adding that the university had expressed its opposition to the sitin. “Unfortunately the Greek state tolerated [the situation] and left the university to fend for itself,” it said.
The university called on local associations to oppose similar initiatives in the future.
