State can oblige citizens to declare savings at home, ruling says
Obliging citizens to declare money they have in bank safe deposit boxes but also stashed away at home is permissible by Greece’s Constitution, according to a decision by the Hellenic Data Protection Authority (HDPA) that was made public late on Wednesday.
According to the HDPA, a recent legislative provision which calls on citizens to add to their declarations of wealth (“pothen esches”) details about cash they have in bank deposit boxes or hidden in their homes, is in line with the Constitution as it “serves the transparency of political and public life.”
