Coast guard patrol rescues migrants off southwestern Peloponnese coast
A coast guard patrol on Saturday responded to a distress call from a yacht carrying 130 migrants off the coast of the seaside village of Methoni in the southwestern Peloponnese.
A few of the passengers had managed to reach the shore after the craft managed to anchor securely in the village’s harbor.
In August, some 70 migrants were rescued from a craggy uninhabited islet off Methoni after their flimsy vessel started taking on water, suggesting that smugglers are routing boats to Italy across southern Greece rather than via the mainland to the western coast.
