Bus services down by 24 pct

An aging fleet of vehicles and a lack of spare parts, compounded by staff shortages, have reduced public transport road services by a quarter in recent years, according to official data.

Specifically, the frequency of services on buses and trolley buses has dropped by 24 percent since 2013.

The state of city buses in particular is a cause for concern as the average age of the vehicles is estimated at 13 years. Hundreds of buses are lying idle due to disrepair while half of the tires on buses and trolley buses are said to be worn.

Earlier this month Transport Minister Christos Spirtzis said that OSY, the transport authority that manages the capital’s buses, would get 500 new vehicles.
