Police take additional security measures over holidays

The Greek Police (ELAS) has announced that it will be increasing security measures and policing in view of the upcoming the holiday season. The measures include more street patrols for the prevention of crimes such as muggings and burglaries, while there will also be an beefed up police presence on public transport, in commercial high streets, in super markets and in open-air markets, among other public spaces.

ELAS will also be increasing the surveillance of premises where large cash transfers take place, such as banks and tax offices. Illegal commerce is also being targeted, authorities said, with more inspections at malls and department stores, among others.

Police are advising citizens to secure their homes before leaving on holidays and to only inform relatives, friends and trustworthy neighbors of their absence, among other precautionary measures.
