Causes of high blood pressure

What causes high blood pressure? As Professor Pavlos Toutouzas said at the press conference, in 90 percent of hypertension sufferers, no specific cause can be found. «Nevertheless, we know that there are certain factors that contribute to hypertension. The basic ones are heredity, obesity, smoking, alcohol, salty food, great stress and a sedentary lifestyle. In addition, certain anti-inflammation drugs for arthritis, contraceptive pills and nasal decongestants can also increase blood pressure,» Toutouzas said. While nothing can be done about hereditary factors, «we can certainly exercise more, avoid salt in food – not only what we add it ourselves but also the hidden salt in cheese, olives, bread, and so on, not take up smoking and keep our weight low.»
