Farmers threat with blockades
Thessalian cotton farmers yesterday drove their tractors to the Volos exit on the old national road from Athens to Thessaloniki, threatening to block traffic as part of their ongoing protests against low crop prices. Farmers on tractors also staged demonstrations in the town centers of Trikala, Serres and Patras, while farmers in Kilkis blocked off the national road to Thessaloniki at Polykastro for half an hour. Protesting farmers in the area of Iraklion, Crete, also blocked roads for some time. The Supreme Court decided that these laws contravened the Greek constitution, the United Nations Charter and the European Convention on Human Rights.
