Union calls for action after student is assaulted in class

A union representing Athens Law School students on Tuesday called on academic authorities to intervene to prevent violence on university grounds after a student was assaulted following a lesson on Monday.

“It is the first time that a violent attack has taken place during a break in an auditorium,” the union said in a statement and asked the deanship of the university to “identify the perpetrators and take the required action so that there are no further victims in future.”

According to sources, the student who was attacked was affiliated with a political party union. He was approached by two young men, one of whom is said to have pinned him to a wall and threatened him. Around 50 students had been in the auditorium at the time of the assault, some of whom tried to intervene, sources said.

The alleged assailant was not identified, though he is said to be part of an occupation by members of anti-establishment groups on the premises of the faculty.
