Samos anesthetists cite moral concerns over abortions

Authorities are investigating the refusal of anesthesiologists at the General Hospital of Samos in the eastern Aegean to provide their services in cases of abortions at 12 weeks or less, citing moral concerns.

In a statement, the 2nd Regional Healthcare Administration of Piraeus & the Aegean said the decision by anesthesiologists was unexpected as they have legally administered anesthesia in abortion cases for pregnancies of less than 12 weeks for many years.

It also vowed to ensure the rights of women on Samos in need of anesthesia by transferring anesthesiologists to Samos from other areas under its jurisdiction.
