Fire survivors say they await emergency benefit payment

One month since the deadly fire in eastern Attica which left 96 dead and a trail of destruction in its wake, survivors have yet to receive the emergency benefit promised by the authorities.

According to a report in Eleftheros Typos, the initial 586-euro benefit for survivors to meet basic needs has not been distributed.

“This benefit has not yet been credited to the municipality’s account. We are waiting on the State General Accounting Office. So far, there’s been nothing,” Dionysia Kanellopoulou, president of the Marathon Federation of Associations, told the paper.

With regard to the lump sum, of the 4,329 applications filed for the 5,000-euro and 8,000-euro grants from the Ministry of Infrastructure, 1,622 household applications have been authorized and 43 from businesses.
