Dozens of street cleaners…

Dozens of street cleaners and garbage collectors yesterday gathered at the Athens court complex to attend a hearing on whether their strike is illegal and excessive. A verdict, which could force them to return to work, is expected today. The Athens Municipality employees are demanding fresh hirings, as well as a 2.5-percent raise as opposed to the government’s offer of 2.1-percent. Meanwhile, tons of garbage are piling up on Athens’s streets. Simitis is expected to discuss the issue with President George W. Bush in Washington on January 10.
