Fraud squad impostors steal foreigners’ cars

A gang of car thieves posing as Finance Ministry economic crime officers (SDOE) are confiscating luxury cars with foreign license plates whose owners do not have valid circulation licenses for the vehicles, SDOE announced yesterday. A large number of cars are said to have been stolen in this way. Members of the gang, which has been operating in Attica and further afield in western Central Greece, have been approaching car owners whom they suspect do not have the proper documentation. Those car owners whose papers are not in order usually feel too guilty or afraid to question the authority of the officers. SDOE warned anyone who is stopped by a person claiming to represent the force to demand they see proof of identity and a search warrant, and if these are not produced, to contact SDOE or their local police station.
