Security deployment to start in 15 days
In two weeks’ time, Greece will gradually start deploying its massive security umbrella ahead of the August Olympic Games, Public Order Minister Giorgos Voulgarakis said yesterday after a meeting with Premier Costas Karamanlis. «I think we are ready to enter the purely Olympic phase, which will start in about 15 days with full – gradual, but full – deployment of security forces and measures,» he told journalists. «Once all the venues are delivered, we will enter the Olympic period.» Voulgarakis insisted that the giant operation, expected to cost over 1 billion euros, is going according to plan, adding that he had found security measures at the borders most satisfactory during a tour this week. The minister will visit Britain on Monday for talks with security officials and meetings with journalists. Some British media have repeatedly rubbished Greece’s Olympic preparations.
