Firemen rescue four from cars swept away by storm in Thassos

Four people had to be pulled from floodwaters after a storm swept their vehicle away on the northern Aegean island of Thassos early Thursday morning.

The intense rainfall flooded streets and houses on the island. The fire service responded to several calls to pump out water in the small town of Limenaria, in the south of the island.

The intense rainfall, which also included hailstorms in parts, submerged many roads while flooding stores and homes.

There were no reports of any injuries in the flooding on Thassos, which has experienced similar problems in the past due to dense and unchecked construction in many parts of the island which traps rainwater.

Municipal officials were Thursday seeking to take stock of the damage to properties and removing tree trunks and other debris swept onto the roads during the downpour.
