Two caught in 20,000 euro kidnapping ring

Two Albanian nationals have been arrested in Attica on suspicion of being part of a gang that kidnapped a fellow countryman and demanded a ransom of 20,000 euros for his release, police said yesterday. The unnamed men, aged 25 and 34, were caught on Thursday in Loutsa, east of Athens, as they accepted money from the hostage’s relatives. Officers had been tipped off by the 48-year-old man’s family. The victim, also not named, had been kidnapped in Loutsa on Wednesday night but police believe he was being kept in an apartment in Galatsi. The other five alleged gang members, who are also thought to be Albanian, became suspicious when their two partners did not return with the money and fled the property, releasing their hostage, officers said. The victim had not been harmed, according to police.
