‘Deployment should serve operational needs’
Another big issue is the structure of forces. In my view, it should be based on the available human and economic resources and tailored to the armed forces’ mission. With serious needs in Evros and on the islands, why are large units being activated in Kozani, Ioannina and even Tripolis? The armed forces’ mission stems from a national defense policy and a national military strategy which have not changed significantly in recent years. Deployment must serve the operational requirements that flow from them. Unfortunately, other reasons – social, economic and developmental – are raised which ignore operational ones and lead to a waste of limited human resources and weaken the main effort. I have expressed my doubts about the reactivation of certain units in the areas you mention.
