Hopes justice will rise out of scandals

As a judge yesterday faced charges that he tried to cash a forged traveler’s check, Greece’s highest-ranking prosecutor voiced hopes the current spate of scandals involving judges would lead to the rebirth of the justice system. «Justice can emerge stronger and be led into a period of regeneration which will re-establish the public’s trust since the relevant bodies are moving swiftly and effectively,» said Supreme Court prosecutor Dimitris Linos. Also yesterday, Justice Minister Anastassis Papaligouras submitted a 12-point draft law to Parliament which seeks to clamp down on corruption in the judiciary. Meanwhile, first instance judge Evangelos Kalousis appeared before a prosecutor to answer charges that he attempted to cash a forged traveler’s check on Wednesday. Kalousis denied the allegation and claimed that he found the check on the ground outside his apartment block. He said he took it to the bank out of curiosity. Kalousis, who has also been threatened with dismissal over allegations linking him to the prostitution of foreign women, said he was being treated unfairly. He was released pending a further investigation.
