International practice

«In other countries, great emphasis is placed on practical teacher training,» KEE researcher Alkistis Verevi told Kathimerini. «In fact, teachers themselves play an important part in shaping the courses for future teachers.» According to data from Eurydice, the information network on European education, the theoretical part of training usually covers general studies as well as the subject the student will eventually teach. The professional part includes subjects related to the teaching skills and practical experience in school. This theoretical and practical training may be done in tandem with university studies or after them, at special teacher training organizations. The simultaneous method is used in Germany, Denmark and Belgium. The second method is used in Italy, France and Spain, while both methods are available in Britain, Ireland, Portugal, Norway, Sweden and Finland (each university decides which method to adopt). In Greece, universities offer teachers a general education and there is the Advanced School of Pedagogical and Technical Training for graduates who wish to teach their subject (such as economic, law and technical disciplines) in professional training institutes.
