Two helicopters and a pigeon fly over a statue of the goddess Athena during yesterday’s Independence Day military parade in central Athens. Greece’s March 25 national day, celebrated throughout the country on Friday, marks the beginning of the Greeks’ war of independence against the Ottoman Empire in 1821, after nearly 400 years of Turkish rule. Thanks partly to the well-timed military intervention of Britain, France, and Russia, Greece achieved its independence in 1830.
