Jewish body urges ban on neo-Nazi meeting
Senior Greek Jewish officials have called on the government to ban an international neo-Nazi meeting planned to take place in the Peloponnese in September. The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece (KIS) argued in a letter made public yesterday that allowing the conference to go ahead would damage Greece’s international image, and could spark violent confrontations. «We believe this gathering, with its neo-Nazi and racist agenda, will blacken Greece’s image abroad,» KIS said. The conference is scheduled for September 16-18, and will reportedly be held at the town of Meligala in the southwestern Peloponnese – site of a 1944 massacre by communist guerrillas of nationalist resistance fighters and civilians. Greek, German, Italian and Spanish extremists are expected to attend. Last month, human rights groups and leftists held a protest in Athens against the meeting.
