Mapping the seafloor
HCMR’s immediate plans include the charting of the Greek seabed and the creation of three-dimensional maps for the Defense Ministry. Scheduled to start next year, the project will be carried out jointly with the army’s hydrographic service. The institute is also planning an expansion of the Poseidon system in the Ionian Sea with the installation of additional floating wave measurement stations. Poseidon, a marine-based monitoring, forecast and information system, is based on a network of measuring stations linked to a satellite system and an operations center. It went into operation in 1998.
