More demands on tender law
The European Commission decided yesterday to send Greece a warning letter about a law passed by the previous PASOK government, placing limits on media shareholders having access to public tenders, even though it is less strict than the law passed by the ruling conservatives which Brussels has already objected to. The government is currently in negotiations with the Commission over changes it has demanded to the controversial law, passed in January which bans owners of 1 percent or more in media firms from bidding for lucrative state deals through their other business interests. The Commission has now asked the government to provide its «observations» about the compatibility of a previous law, passed by the Socialists, with EU legislation. However, sources indicated that Brussels is pleased with the progress of talks regarding changes to the more recent law.
