Two Greek-Cypriot musicians play…

Two Greek-Cypriot musicians play their instruments on a rooftop south of the Green Line near the UN buffer zone in Nicosia yesterday. The musicians were among dozens of artists from both sides of the divided island who participated in a daylong event aimed at using music to express unity on the UN’s 60th anniversary. The event – called ‘Long Distance Call’ – was the brainchild of Dutch composer Merlijn Twaalhoven, who visited the island last year. He said he gave the event its name in reference to the fact that a telephone call from the south of the island to the Turkish-held north must first be routed through Turkey.
