Greece blacklisted for flouting green laws
An apparently lax approach by the government on the environmental front has landed Greece in eighth position on the EU’s blacklist of countries which are violating the bloc’s green rules. According to data released yesterday by Synaspismos Left Coalition MEP Dimitris Papadimoulis, there are 47 outstanding cases against Greece regarding the insufficient or poor implementation of European Commission guidelines. Most breaches relate to waste management and environmental protection. Some 40 warning letters have been sent to local authorities on these cases, the data showed. Greece has yet to set local laws on EU guidelines relating to noise pollution, the strategic impact of environmental consequences and access to environmental information. On the list of 25 countries, Spain is the worst offender, with 183 outstanding cases.
