Doctor gave migrants fake health certificates

A forgery ring involving at least one doctor and a lawyer has issued 1,800 fake health certificates to immigrants this month alone, using the Attiko Hospital in Haidari as its base, Health Minister Nikitas Kaklamanis said yesterday. A university doctor, responsible for issuing health certificates at Attiko, allegedly gave a clean bill of health to hundreds of migrants without submitting them to standard medical tests. The unidentified doctor, believed to have been aided by a lawyer, allegedly admitted to receiving payment for forging the certificates, which immigrants need when applying for residence permits. Health Ministry officials are to inspect the Attiko and three other hospitals where similar practices are rumored to be taking place, Kaklamanis said. He said he was forwarding the doctor’s file to Athens’s chief prosecutor.
