Police pick up scent of drugs after pet theft
An investigation into a pet shop theft in Ioannina, northewestern Greece, led police to uncover a drug-selling ring involving cannabis and heroin, sources said yesterday. Police said they found the illegal substances after searching the home of a man they suspected was involved in the theft of some 12,000 euros’ worth of animals, including birds and reptiles, from a pet store. During the search, police found some of those animals, but also 35 grams of cannabis and a small amount of heroin. The suspect was arrested along with a second man who was caught red-handed using drugs, officers said. A search of the suspect’s car and of his parents’ home nearby uncovered another 218 grams of cannabis. Police continued their investigation at a third person’s home, where they found more stolen animals but no more drugs.
