Conscript found dead outside military camp
An army conscript who went missing from a military camp in northeastern Greece on Friday was found dead the next morning several hundred meters from his guard post and authorities were still examining the cause of his death yesterday. The unnamed 24-year-old soldier was serving as an officer at an army camp in Orestiada in the region of Evros. His colleagues reported him missing on Friday afternoon after the soldier took his weapon and went to check on the guard post he was in charge of in the area of Heimoni. A search was launched immediately, military authorities said, but the officer’s body was not found until 8.20 a.m. on Saturday. The soldier was found dead some 500 meters from the guard post which he had gone to check. The army did not immediately say how the officer died but did say that the local prosecutor was investigating the case.
