PASOK leader George Papandreou…
PASOK leader George Papandreou smiles as the Socialist International (SI) council members applaud following his unanimous election as the SI’s new president in Athens yesterday. Papandreou, 53, was the sole candidate for the post at the helm of the worldwide organization of Socialist parties. Papandreou said his chief priorities as the SI’s president would be ‘democraticizing globalization,’ boosting regional cooperation’ and ‘uniting citizens toward a common goal.’ ‘The Socialists… have a moral obligation to rejuvenate political life and give hope to the world… We must revive people’s trust in political institutions and in their own strength,’ he said.
