Police onto counterfeit ring, three arrested

Police appear to have broken up a counterfeiting ring in central Athens after arresting three people on Saturday with equipment able to produce fake 50-euro notes. Police said yesterday that they arrested two Nigerian nationals, aged 26 and 22, and a 55-year-old Greek, after they uncovered the counterfeiting equipment during a raid on a hotel room. A fourth person, who is considered the head of the operation, is also wanted by authorities. A search of the room uncovered bank account details involving large amounts of money and 11 ATM cards. Police are now looking into how long the ring has been operating and how much of the fake money has been distributed in what may be part of a money-laundering operation.
