Shepherd who beat wife dead surrenders

A shepherd who lived with his wife in a shipping container in Aspropyrgos, west of Athens, turned himself into police yesterday after beating the 31-year-old woman to death, officers said. Yiannis Angelakopoulos, 50, allegedly hit his wife, Maria, repeatedly on Saturday and then dumped her at the local hospital, where she died from her injuries. The suspect was tracked down in Peristeri, western Athens, later the same day, but sped off in his car when officers attempted to arrest him. A chase ensued with Angelakopoulos driving at high speed and through red lights. Police gave up the chase because the shepherd had his two children, aged 4 and 5, in the car and officers feared they were going to be involved in an accident. Angelakopoulos turned himself in yesterday afternoon. His children were placed in the care of a social worker.
