Charred rubbish lies…

Charred rubbish lies on a street in Exarchia, central Athens, yesterday as a man tries to open a path along the pavement. Thousands of tons of garbage have piled up in Athens and other cities because of a strike by local authority workers, which began on Thursday. Heads of the POE-OTA union, which represents the workers, met in Athens yesterday and decided to continue the strike today. A march to the Interior Ministry has also been planned for today, with unionists hoping to meet with the minister. They are demanding back pay and productivity bonuses and for more of their jobs to be classified as hazardous.
