Return to cities slow but steady

Cars continued to pour into Athens yesterday as the Easter break wound up for many holidaymakers. However, about half of the residents that left the city appear to have extended their time off ahead of the long May Day weekend coming up. Police said that a quarter of the 1.34 million cars that left Athens and Thessaloniki for Easter had returned on Monday, while about 337,000 more vehicles headed back to the two cities yesterday. Problem areas for traffic heading into Athens remained Kakia Skala, close to Corinth, and Maliakos Gulf, near Lamia in central Greece. In a bid to help make the country’s roads safer in the future, a source at the Public Works Ministry said yesterday that the government intends to reshuffle the responsibilities of road management among municipalities, ministries and prefectures. This will help reduce the number of traffic accidents by making sure that the roads are better taken care of, the source added. Additionally, those whose cars suffer damage due to poor roads will be able to obtain compensation more easily from the state.
