Toddler’s life saved by baby liver transplant

A 2-year-old boy who only had a few weeks to live because he was a suffering from a rare liver disease underwent a successful transplant in Thessaloniki after receiving the organ from 9-month-old baby who had just died, doctors said yesterday. The 2-year-old had the transplant at the northern city’s Ippocrateio hospital after the younger child’s parents, in Athens, agreed to donate their baby’s liver. Surgeons praised the courage of the baby’s parents. Doctors said they had been looking for a suitable donor for almost two years as it is difficult to find matching organs when children are such a young age. The child’s parents had been considering taking the boy to Italy for a transplant, at a cost of some 230,000 euros. The child underwent the surgery on Wednesday and doctors said that his condition was improving.
