Airwaves headed for cleanup

The Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT) yesterday launched a large-scale operation on Mount Hymettus, eastern Athens, aimed at eradicating from the mountain, and the airwaves, tens of illegal antennas used by television and radio stations. After four months of preparations, EETT officials said that they will run a campaign for as long as is needed to pull down an estimated 30-35 antennas. A strong force of riot police will escort the officials who are to assess the legality of antennas and prepare a file for prosecutors against violators. Yesterday, the contents of 12 illegally installed container sheds were investigated on the mountain, while electronic equipment belonging to four radio stations and two television stations was confiscated. «We have confiscated the equipment. We have also recorded the details of people who claimed to be working with legal stations in order to check their identity,» EETT vice president Nikos Koulouris told Skai radio.
