Robbers strike gold after tying up jeweler

Police in Attica are hunting four suspects who stole 150,000 euros’ worth of jewelry from a store near central Athens after tying up and beating the owner, officer said on Saturday. The 60-year-old jeweler, Haralambos Ioannidis, said a couple who visited his store earlier in the day returned to the shop in Neos Cosmos at 10 p.m. on Friday, asking him to appraise a gold necklace they wanted to pawn. Police said that as Ioannidis had his back turned to the couple, two men came into the store, hit him over the head and covered his mouth with insulation tape. They emptied any valuable items they could find into a bag and then asked the jeweler to hand over the keys to the safe. Ioannidis said he did not have the keys so the robbers hit him again and then locked him in the store before taking off.
