Residents from the village of Ligortynos near Iraklion in Crete look at the damage caused by the partial collapse of a road yesterday after a landslide from a nearby mountain late Wednesday threatened their homes. Police stopped traffic in the area while the Public Power Corporation (PPC) also cut off electricity to the region for safety reasons. Many of the residents have decided to leave the village until specialists can determine the cause of the landslide. Locals say there have been other landslides there in the past. Prefectural authorities said they have recorded the damage incurred and are seeking assistance from regional officials to fund the repair work.
