Teachers met with tear gas
Riot police used tear gas to disperse protesting schoolteachers during a march in central Athens yesterday as strike action by educators entered its third straight week. No injuries were reported and no arrests were made as demonstrators attempted to make their way to Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis’s residence. Primary and preschool teachers, striking over pay demands, were joined yesterday by their high school counterparts, who walked off the job for 48 hours. The government repeated that it remains focused on its education reforms. «The government is not diverting from its reforms program,» said alternate government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros. Last week, clashes again erupted between protesting primary school teachers and riot police.
