Tight at top of soccer league
Panathinaikos narrowed the gap separating it from front runner Olympiakos in the Super League to two points with a 1-0 home victory over its archrival in Athens last night. The home side went ahead with an own goal in the 48th minute when Olympiakos defender Thanassis Kostoulas headed in a cross delivered by Spanish midfielder Victor, who was sent off in the game’s final minute. Third-place AEK kept in touch with the leaders – a point behind Panathinaikos – courtesy of a 3-1 away win over Aris. In yesterday’s other games, Atromitos beat Ergotelis 2-1 in a mid-table battle. Panionios and visiting Aegaleo played to a scoreless draw. Struggling Xanthi beat Ionikos 2-0. In a relegation-zone battle, Apollon Kalamaria defeated Iraklis, 2-1. On Saturday, OFI and Larissa, both mid-table, played a scoreless draw. Thessaloniki club PAOK put aside its grave finances for a 1-0 home victory over Kerkyra.
