Couple arrested over coca-infused souvenirs

A couple returning from a vacation in Peru were arrested at Athens International Airport because they were found to be carrying a number of coca-based products, including sweets, which are legal in the Latin American country but illegal in Greece. Police said yesterday that the man, aged 44, and woman, 54, were taken into custody after customs officials searched their luggage and found inside some 400 grams of coca leaves. The drug cocaine is extracted from coca leaves. Officers also discovered more than 200 grams of shredded coca leaves, 120 grams of coca leaf powder and sweets, biscuits, juices and tea which contained coca. The couple told police that all the products had been intended for personal consumption.
