Another issue in this case is the relationship between the youths concerned, the rivalry that exists among them, particularly between the girls, who appear to be lacking in any sense of solidarity with each other. «The girl in question might be more attractive to the boys in her class and so the other girls might have had no desire to protect her,» said Pantazi. Added Paraskevopoulou, «Competition among young girls of that age is often very traumatic.» And Lasithiotaki says that relationships with the opposite sex are no better. «The development of female sexuality is hostage to women’s feeling of helplessness born of fear and the need for acceptance by the male population,» she explained. «The result is the perpetuation of an acquired weakness on the part of women when confronted with male strength, the development of guilt and an absence of responsibility for her behavior, leading her to tolerate abuse by men,» she added. As for the 16-year-old girl from Amarynthos, Lasithiotaki says it’s very likely that the young woman has the worst-possible view of society and probably sees the world as a hostile place from which she has little chance of escape.
