Warnings ignored

Last May, the Panhellenic Hospital Doctors’ Union revealed in a damning report that tap water contained lead, asbestos fibers, chloroform, insecticides, aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorine. All of them are substances that cause irreversible damage to the human body in just a short period of time, let alone when consumed every day for years. Four months later, a report by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki uncovered the scandal of over-chlorinated water in Volos. That led to a European Union warning about the forgotten 15 municipalities in the country whose drinking water contains arsenic and other toxic substances. So is it possible that no measures are taken regarding such a serious issue of public health? Is nobody disquieted by these alarm signals? Can whole populations be poisoned? The problem here is not just a lack of conscience but the state’s complete absence in dealing with these issues.
