University bash turns into a riot
Six people were detained yesterday after a party at Panteion University in Athens turned violent in the early morning when revelers started damaging property at the school and in surrounding areas and clashing with police. Officers said that a group of youths, suspected anarchists, began causing damage at about 3.30 a.m. within the university grounds and surrounding streets. Eight parked cars were attacked and windows in nearby buildings were smashed. When riot police arrived at the university, the youths allegedly threw Molotov cocktails, pieces of metal and wood as well as fire extinguishers at them. One of the fire extinguishers hit an overhead power line, which snapped and left many homes and businesses in the area without electricity for several hours. University authorities had to intervene to defuse the situation more than three hours after the rioting began. Police said they are trying to gather information to lead them to more suspects.
