Mob-style hits kill two men

A 35-year-old man was shot and killed in Aghios Dimitrios, southeast Athens, early yesterday in the second mob-style hit to take place in the capital in two days. Police said that Giorgos Arvanitakis was shot twice, in the head and shoulder, when leaving his apartment. Neighbors living in the apartment block told police that two men shot Arvanitakis before escaping on foot. Meanwhile, early on Saturday, one man was killed and another seriously injured when they were attacked while leaving a late-night restaurant in Nikaia, western Athens. Aristeidis Giagias, aged 38, was killed while the second man, Vassilis Nasipian, aged 27, was taken to the Nikaia General Hospital in serious condition after they were shot at by two assailants. Police believe the incidents are connected to gangs involved in illegal activities such as selling protection to nightspots and narcotics. Authorities have ruled out the possibility of the two incidents being related.
