Residents tear down hidden phone aerials

Residents in Exarchia, central Athens, took the law into their own hands on Wednesday and pulled down two illegal mobile phone antennas that had been hidden on the rooftop of a building being constructed, it was revealed yesterday. Some 300 residents gathered around the building on the corner of Kallidromiou and Plapouta streets and tore down the two aerials which had been placed less than 80 meters away from a nursery school and primary school. Sources said that the Athens City Council had decided months ago to remove the antennas but no action had yet been taken. Tests showed that one of the two antennas was operating on three frequencies, even though its permit only allowed it to operate on one. The second antenna had been installed without a permit.
