A child plays in the sea as hundreds of volunteers and residents clean a beach in Hellenikon, southern Athens. Locals took over the beach, pulling down metal fences as part of a protest initiated by the area’s mayor, Christos Kortzidis, who went on a hunger strike over three weeks ago to draw attention to the alleged illegal operation of businesses on the beachfront. There were unconfirmed reports that Kortzidis ended his hunger strike yesterday.
