Nikitas Markoulis, the go-getter
When he was still a child, his father sent him to Messaria on an errand. He was back in half an hour, record time. «What a tsiftis [go-getter],» a customer commented, and the nickname stuck with him. Nikitas has been in charge of his father’s ouzeri, Kyma, built in 1944, since 1955. It’s open all day and Nikitas is always there. When the ouzeri is quiet he does the paperwork and accounts. He is not moved by the example of an inhabitant of neighboring Koufonisi who rents out 1,000 or so rooms. «It’s better to keep the island as it is. With just a few people and some rooms. We don’t want to become rich.»
