Tourists injured after cafe roof collapses

Five tourists, including an 8-year-old girl, suffered minor injuries yesterday morning when the roof of a cafeteria in the historic center of Rhodes collapsed on them. The tourists – an Italian couple and their daughter along with an Englishman and a Swede – were all taken to hospital on the island immediately after the accident. The Englishman, the most seriously injured of the five, had to undergo a minor operation, doctors said. The accident caused some panic in the busy square, in the island’s popular old town, which had been packed with tourists at the time. According to authorities, the cafe whose roof collapsed had undergone refurbishment last year. Municipal authorities pledged to carry out inspections on all cafes in the island’s historic center to determine whether they meet safety standards.
