An unforgettable voyage

Excursions of power boats in a group reduce the potential risk of misadventure and is a tactic encouraged by the Inflatable Boats of Greece Organization, whose president, Tasos Portokaloglou, has many of his own fond memories of these kinds of voyages. «We have 200 members and this year celebrated our 20th anniversary. We have held many group voyages that are planned months ahead. Fortunately, we have had no serious problems,» he said. Angelos M. has made several trips on his own. «I bought a 6-meter craft two years ago for fun and for trips to beaches that are inaccessible overland. I wanted to have freedom of movement and to enjoy unspoiled beaches. I had a sailing license and then took lessons in operating a motorboat. The most difficult experience I had was one summer between Patras and Cephalonia. I set out with my girlfriend about 8 p.m., expecting to arrive about 10 p.m. But when we left port, things became difficult, as the wind had risen from 3 to 6-7 knots. In the middle of the Gulf of Patras, the waves were coming at us from the bow and from the beam. We couldn’t see in front of us and it took us four hours to get to Cephalonia.»
