Man dies in fire at warehouse

A 21-year-old man was burned to death in a fire in a food warehouse in northern Greece early yesterday but firefighters managed to rescue three members of his family from the blaze. The unnamed Bulgarian national lived in the warehouse in the village of Patrida, near Veria, with his parents and wife. The building was used to store foodstuffs for the local Arvanitidis supermarket where the family was employed. The fire began at the 4,000-square-meter warehouse at about 1.30 a.m. yesterday for reasons that were not immediately clear, the fire service said. Five fire engines and 17 firefighters were sent to put out the blaze. They pulled three family members from the burning building but were unable to find the 21-year-old who, it is thought, had tried to recover some personal belongings from the warehouse. The survivors were taken to the hospital suffering from burns and breathing problems caused by smoke inhalation. Authorities did not release further details.
